15th Amendment: gave black men the right to vote
17th amendment: granted people the right to vote for senators
19th Amendment: gave women the right to vote
24th Amendment: banned poll taxes and other voting barriers
26th Amendment: lowered the voting age to 18 from 21
Rational choice voting behavior
When a person votes based on their individual self-interest and who has carefully studied issues and platforms
Retrospective voting behavior
When a person votes based on the past track record of a candidate
Prospective voting behavior
When a person votes based on predictions of how a party or candidate will preform in the future
Party-line voting behavior
When a person votes for all the candidates of that voter’s party
Structural voting barriers
When a policy or law can prevent people from voting or encourages people to vote
Political efficacy
A citizen’s belief about whether their vote matters
Demographics (affecting voting)
This is due to some types of people or different ages are more likely to vote than others
Type of election (affecting voting)
Typically larger scale elections get higher participation than small, local elections
