Desertification
A form of land degradation that occurs when soil deteriorates to a desert-like conditions.
Biodiversty
The variety of organisms living in a location — and reduce plant cover.
Agribusiness
The large-scale system that includes the
production, processing, and distribution of
agricultural products and equipment.
Boserup hypothesis
That food supply was directly affected by the
population size.
Carl Sauer
Sauer argued that all regions of the Earth
were impacted by human behavior and had
been altered by human interaction, he also
believed that cultural landscapes were the
most important branch of geographic inquiry.
Dairying
An agricultural activity involving the raising of
livestock, most commonly cows and goats,
for dairy products such as milk, cheese, and
butter.
Fallow
Plowed and harrowed but left unsown for a
period in order to restore its fertility as part
of a crop rotation or to avoid surplus
production.
Feedlot
Places where livestock are concentrated in at
very small area and raised on hormones and
hearty grains that prepare them for slaughter
a much more rapid rate than grazing.
Green Revolution
Movement beginning in the 1950s and 1960s
In which scientists used knowledge of
genetics to develop new high-yield strains of
Grain crop.
Horticulture
The branch of plant agriculture dealing with
garden crops, generally fruits, vegetables,
and ornamental plants.
Intertillage
Intertillage means tilling the soil between the
rows of a crop already planted in the soil.
Luxury crops
A “luxury crop” is a crop that is grown to for
serve some purpose other than sustaining
human life. All of these crops are consumed
reasons other than nutrition and so are
called “luxury crops.”
Market Gardening
A type of farming that produces fruits,
vegetables, and flowers and typically serves a
specific market or urban area.
Mediterranean agriculture
An agricultural practice that consists of
growing hardy trees and shrubs and raising
sheeps and goats.
Neolithic Revolution
The Neolithic Revolution was when seed and
root crops were first cultivated by humans
and occurred at roughly 10,000 B.C.E.
