Q

thrombocytes

A

platelets
less than 1% of blood
not true cells - fragments
job: help to clot damaged blood vessels

Q

lymphocytes

A

25% of WBC
2nd most numerous
large nucleus
found in lymph nodes
2 types: T cells, B cells

17
Q

monocytes

A

3-8% of WBC
largest
u-shaped nucleus
become macrophages

18
Q

hemostasis

A

a series of reactions that stops the bleeding when a blood vessel wall breaks

19
Q

steps of hemostasis

A

step 1: vascular spasm
-muscle wall of blood vessel constricts in response to released proteins
-purpose: decreases blood loss

step 2: platelet plug formation
- Von Willebrand factor binds platelets to exposed collagen fibers, forming a platelet plug

step 3: coagulation
-blood clotting
-clotting factors do an activation cascade and activate fibrin
-fibrin threads reinforce the platelet plug and create a long-lasting fix to allow time to heal
