Unit 9 Volcano Study guide Flashcards
What is a Volcano
A mountain that forms from the Earth’s crust when magma
reaches the Earth’s surface.
What is Magma
Molten material beneath the Earth’s surface.
What is Lava
Molten material that has reached the Earth’s surface.
What is the difference between Lava and Magma
Lava has reached the surface while Magma is still underground
Where do Volcanoes form
Volcanic belts are where volcanoes form.
What is the Ring of Fire
A major belt of volcanoes that stretches all around the Pacific Ocean.
What are Diverging Plate Boundrys
Volcanoes form along mid-ocean ridges, where two plates pull apart.
What are Converging Plate Boundrys
Many volcanoes form at these boundaries.
What is an Island Arc
A series of volcanic islands created by converging plate
boundaries.
Where are three locations that have volcanoes in the USA
Mt. St. Helens in the Northwest U.S.
Mt. Rainier in the Northwest U.S.
Volcanoes among the Andes Mountains in South America.
What is a Hot Spot
An area where material from deep within the Earth’s mantle rises through the crust and melts to form magma.
What is inside a volcano
Inside a volcano is a system of passageways in which magma can move.
What is a Magma Chamber
An area beneath the volcano where magma collects.
What is a Pipe
A long tube extending from the magma chamber, to the surface, through which magma travels.
What is a Vent
An opening through which molten rock and gas leave the volcano.
What is Lava Flow
The spread of lava as it pours out of a vent.
