A lack of well trained generals and having to fight on unfamiliar and hostile territory

More motivation to protect their home, being able to fight on familiar and friendly territory, lots of good and well trained generals

A lack of industrial manufacturers, a agricultural economy, the need for trade between a foreign country in order to keep the economy running, and a lack of manpower

The Anaconda Plan - a complete blockade of Southern ports followed by the capture of the Mississippi River and ending with the capture of New Orleans
