Define Normal Waking Consciousness:
NWC can be defined as the state of consciousness we experience when we are awake and aware of our thoughts, feelings and perceptions from internal events and the surrounding environment.
What does it mean when consciousness is described as a hypothetical construct?
It is believed to exist but cannot be directly observed.
Consciousness is set to operate on a…
Continuum.
What is at the top and bottom of the continuum of awareness?
Top: Focus selective Attention, bottom: Coma
Define Altered States of Consciousness (ASC):
ASC is when we deviate from the normal baseline of waking consciousness.
What are the 7 characteristics that explain how a ASC dIFFERS from a NWC?
Level of Awareness, Content Limitations, Controlled and automatic processes, perceptual and cognitive distortions, emotional awareness, self control time orientation.
Explain what perceptual and cognitive distortions refer to.:
The degree of awareness and efficiency of your perceptions and cognitions.
What is daydreaming?
When we daydream we shift our attention to our private thoughts, feelings and imagined scenarios and ignore the external world.
Why is daydreaming considered and ASC?
Because the level of awareness of external stimuli is reduced.
How does alcohol alter our counsciousness?
Alcohol is a depressant, slowing or depressing the nervous system and, as a result, alters our state of consciousness.
What is one more example of an ASC?
Meditation.
