The unilateral embryological muscle mass receiving innervation from a single spinal cord segment or spinal nerve comprises a myotome. Upper limb muscles usually receive motor fibers from several spinal cord segments via multisegmental peripheral nerves. Thus, most muscles include more than one myotome, and most often, multiple spinal cord segments are involved in producing the movements. The muscle myotomes are grouped by joint movement to facilitate clinical testing (Fig. 3.16 and Table 3.1).
