Q
How is food provision and agriculture being improved in Kibera ?
A
- There are lots of farmers in Kibera this means there is limited space. This has led to sack farming
- This type of farming utilises sacks filled with compost that are used for growing food
- These sacks are cheap + easily sourced locally
- The compost is produced from crop residue + food waste
- The seeds are bought and sown into the sacks
- As the sacks take up little space the farmers can move the around
- Due to the low income of people in Kibera they have to farm organically, they remove insects + plant pests by hand
- The farmers can then consume their own food, reducing the costs of buying it
- They can also sell a surplus locally
- This has boosted food security in the settlement
