Q

what are the 8 structures of the kidneys and their functions?

A

the 8 structures of the kidneys are:
‘and that particular robber, robbed red riding’s coat’

  1. adrenal glands: separate organ of the endocrine system. sits on top of each kidney
  2. transparent capsule: a capsule that surrounds each kidney and gives it a ‘glistening’ effect
  3. peri renal fat capsule: a fatty capsule that surrounds each kidney and cushions it from blow
  4. renal fascia: this is an outer-layer of dense, fibrous connective tissue that anchors the kidneys and adrenal glands to surrounding structures
  5. renal cortex: outer layer, light in colour
  6. renal medulla: inner layer, darker in colour. has regions called renal pyramids
  7. renal pelvis: flat, funnel-shaped tube
  8. calyces: sit at bottom of renal pyramids, collect urine and transport it to ureters and then to bladder
