- adrenal glands: separate organ of the endocrine system. sits on top of each kidney
- transparent capsule: a capsule that surrounds each kidney and gives it a ‘glistening’ effect
- peri renal fat capsule: a fatty capsule that surrounds each kidney and cushions it from blow
- renal fascia: this is an outer-layer of dense, fibrous connective tissue that anchors the kidneys and adrenal glands to surrounding structures
- renal cortex: outer layer, light in colour
- renal medulla: inner layer, darker in colour. has regions called renal pyramids
- renal pelvis: flat, funnel-shaped tube
- calyces: sit at bottom of renal pyramids, collect urine and transport it to ureters and then to bladder
