Albert Namatjira on the other hand, used a combination of traditionally European and traditionally Aboriginal visual qualities. This way, he was able to encourage many indigenous artists to stay connected to their own culture.

John Olsen, a well known Australian Abstract Artist, used a variety of visual qualities in his artwork ‘Lake Eyre’ which was published in 1975. Growing up in Australia, Olsen admired the feeling and energy of being on Australian land. Olsen wanted to share this feeling with the audience viewing his art by using specific brushstokes, marks and colours.

In our current Visual Arts unit we have been focusing on John Olsen’s ‘Lake Eyre’, an abstract oil painting of Lake Erye, South Australia.
Olsens connection to land (body paragraph one)
Olsen called Lake Erye his “soul place” and once again was inspired by it’s energy when in flood.

Lake Eyre is painted as if from a birds eye view, allowing the audience to be observers. He used warm cobalt yellow for the earth and sand, and small animal track markings as the water encroached. These qualities are what enabled the audience to experience the same joy as Olsen by observing the Lake come to life.

In contrast to the yellow and sustaining the audience’s attention, Olsen painted the water in a calming aquatic blue. He softly blended the blue in thick brushstrokes to create areas of shallow and deep water. John Olsen used colours to immerse his audience in the peace of creation and share the significant meaning there is to Lake Eyre.

Albert Namatjira is also known for using visual qualities to share his culture and story with his audience. Namatjira is and Indigenous Australian and part of the Aranda people. He attended a European school and and discovered his passion for art as he was taught be a European-Australian. He practiced using watercolour paints and depicting Australian Landscapes.

The artwork of Albert Namatjira’s that we have studied this term, ‘Palm Valley’, is set on the land of his mothers side of family. Namatjira has always felt cultrually connected to the land and he made it a priority to continue to appreciate his ancestry while attending a European School. He wanted his audience to appreciate the land and recognise indigenous artists.
