Growing up in Australia, Olsen admired the feeling and energy of being on Australian land. Lake Eyre is painted as if from a birds eye view, allowing the audience to be observers. He used warm cobalt yellow for the earth and sand, and small animal track markings as the water encroached. These qualities are what enabled the audience to experience the same joy as Olsen by observing the Lake come to life.

The artwork of Albert Namatjira’s that we have studied this term, ‘Palm Valley’, is set on the land of his mothers side of family. Namatjira has always felt cultrually connected to the land and he made it a priority to continue to appreciate his ancestry while attending a European School. He wanted his audience to appreciate the land and recognise indigenous artists.

Namatjira used watercolours to detail gum trees and enhance the deep reds of the mountains which are symbolic to Australia. The perspective of the painting is completely symetrical and cool colours were diluted to create shadow and an authetic atmosphere.
