Validity Flashcards
What is validity
The degree to which something measures what it claims to and the extent to which findings can be generalised.
Internal validity
The degree to which a study establishes accurate cause and effect relationship (results due to manipulation of IV, not extraneous variables)
External validity
The extent to which findings can be generalised to situations out of research environment
Threats to validity
Extraneous / confounding variables
Demand characteristics
Investigator effects
Leading questions
Ecological validity
External validity
Extent to which psychologists can apply findings to real life settings
Temporal validity
External validity
Extent to which findings can be applied across time to diff contexts
Population validity
External validity
How well a sample can be generalised to wider population
Face validity
Internal validity
Extent to which self-reports measure what they are claiming to
Concurrent validity
Internal validity
Comparing performance in tests to already recognised tested that are trusted to validify results
Improving validity of questionnaires
Lie scale, check for honesty and social desirability bias. Do this by having 2 qs asking same thing and anonymity
Improving validity of interviews
Using direct quotes, triangulation which is using diff sources as evidence like diaries or interviews with family
Improving validity of experiments
Control group to see effect of IV on DV
Standardise procedure limit investigator effects and demand characteristics
Improving validity of observations
Narrow behaviour categories and covert observations
