variation Flashcards
what is variation
the difference characteristics within species
what is a species
a group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
what are the 2 types of variation and give example
genetic ( hair colour , eye colour)
environmental (scars, bruises)
what does massive amount of genetic variation lead to
mutations , new phenotypes
what is natural selection
“survival of the fittest” -> the more adapted offspring will continue to live on and pass on their genes
who came up with the idea of natural selection
charles darwin
what else did charles darwin come up with
evolution -> the idea that we all evolved from a simple ancestor
what is evolution(not the idea)
a change in the inherited characteristics of a population over generations
what is the evidence for evolution
1) fossils
2) antibiotic resistance
how are fossils made
hard parts replaced by minerals
preserved traces
amber
why is fossil records unreliable
most of early life forms were soft bodied
what is antibiotic resistance
where bacteria mutates to become resistant
forms because antibiotics are overtaken or fully prescription isnt done
what are the causes for extinction
change in environment
new predator
new disease
new competition
what is selective breeding
where we breed organisms to have desired characteristics
what is good about selective breeding
desired characteristics (eg cows make more milk , friendlier dogs) , , large unique flowers
