Q

What are some reasons for variations in ethnicity within London?

A

Lots of diversity within London is primarily due to the governmental policies post war which encouraged migrants to move to the UK ( post colonial immigration)

  • Windrush generation brought Black Caribbean economic migrants to London to fill postwar worker shortages
  • opening of EU borders attracted a large number of Eastern European economic migrants
  • Indian migrants ( 1 million) came from poorer areas of India with initially men migrating alone
  • rapid growth in skills, production and job market as well as high levels of education and training hubs (London world city) is attracting Chinese and African students

These allowed bridgheader communities to form and enclaves e.g. Southall
