Vessels Of Head And Neck 2 Flashcards
Carotid sinus
At origin of internal carotid artery
Regulates systematic blood pressure (baroreceptors)
What are the four portions that the internal carotid artery are divided into?
Cervical portion, petrous portion, Caverness portion, cerebral portion
Path of the internal carotid artery
The internal carotid artery continues up in the carotid sheath, passing anterior to the superior cervical ganglion (part of cervical sympathetic chain), The prevertebral muscles and TPs of C-spine
Carotid triangle boundaries
Anteroinferiorly by superior belly of omohyoid, anteriosuperiorly by posterior belly of diagastric and stylohyoid, posteriorly by SCM
Does the cervical portion of the ICA have branches?
No branches
What are the branches of the petrous portion of the ICA?
Caroticotympanic & artery of pterygoid canal
Where is the petrous portion of the ICA located?
Within the carotid canal, within the petrous portion of the temporal bone. It’s shaped like a tipped over L primarily horizontal
What nerves are in close relation to the Caverness portion of the ICA
CN3, CN4, CNV1, CN6
What is the clinical significance of the middle cerebral artery?
This artery is responsible for bringing oxygen to many portions of the brain and is often blocked off during a stroke.
The middle cerebral artery is a terminal branch of the cerebral portion of the internal carotid artery. It’s the largest branch that runs in the lateral cerebral Fisher, forms in anastomosis with anterior and posterior cerebral arteries
What branches contribute to the circle of Willis?
Anterior cerebral artery (w/ anterior communicating branch)
ICA (cerebral part)
Posterior communicating artery
Posterior cerebral artery
What is the circle of Willis?
Circulus arteriosus
Circular anastomosis between ICA and V-B. Situated at base of brain in interpeduncular fossa surrounding optic chiasma, pituitary, etc.
Arteries of scalp
Supratrochlear Supraorbital Superior temporal Posterior auricular Occipital
Subclavian artery
Arise at bifurcation of brachiocephalic trunk into common carotid artery and subclavian on RIGHT
And from aortic arch on LEFT
What gives off the right recurrent laryngeal nerve?
Vagus nerve on right side
How are the three parts of the subclavian artery divided?
1st part: medial to anterior scalene
Vertebral artery, internal thoracic artery, Thyrocervical trunk
2nd part: posterior to anterior scalene
Costocervical trunk
3rd part: lateral border of anterior scalene to lateral border of first rib
Dorsal scapular artery
