Visual Unity
The quality of relating the visual elements of a compostion.
Gestalt Harmony
Patterns can only be understood as unified wholes.
Proximity
The closer two or more visual elements are, the more likely they will be seen as a pattern.
Similarity (Repetition)
Visual elements that are similar tend to be seen as related.
Motif
A design unit/shape that is repeated enough to make it a dominant figure.
Rhythm
The regular/irregular spacing of an art element that creates a measured unit and a sense of movement.
Continuation
Visual elements without or with few interruptions. The arrangement of the elements creates movement.
Closure
Nearly complete lines are seen as “closed”.
Movement
The visual pathway established by the motif.
Economy
Using only the needed amount.
Picture Plane
Surface of the canvas.
Figure/Postive Shapes
Art elements produce the subject.
Ground/Negative Shapes
Unoccupied/Empty space
Op Art
Created by heavy Figure/Ground relationships.

Composition with repeated design.
