Where is a pulse measured in adults?
Radial- wrist
Carotid- throat
Apical- chest
Where is pulse measured in infants?
Brachial- inside of the arm
Apical- over the heart
Pulse abnormalities
Bradycardia- less than 60bpm
Tachycardia- greater than 100bpm
Dysthymia- irregular
Three tests for pulse
Rate- bpm
Rhythm
Quality
Normal pulse
60-100 bpm
How is respiration measured?
Move your hand and the patient hand to their chest for 30 seconds.
What to measure in respiration’s?
Rate
Depth
Rhythm
Signs of high blood pressure?
Dizziness
Blood nose
Headaches
Risk factors for high blood pressure?
Age (over 55) Obesity Smoking Poor diet (a lot of salt) Non active lifestyle
Normal blood pressure reading?
Systolic: 90-140
Diastolic: 60-90
How is blood pressure measured?
Wrap the cuff around the patients arm, squeeze the inflation bulb and inflate the bladder, release the valve slowly listening to the sounds, take not when it begins and ends.
