Homonym

→ Explain how the root words combine to create the meaning of this word.

A

Homo means “same.” Nym mean “name.”

“Homonym” means words that sound the same but have different meanings. They have the “same name” as one another.

Common
→ Compare and contrast two (2) accurate meanings for each word.
–> Honors: Develop a situation in which the use of different meanings would lead to different outcomes.

A

Common can mean something that is shared by many people, like the “Common Core” Common can also mean something that isn’t very valuable. These meanings both say that there is a lot of something, but one says this is good and the other says this is bad.

Honors: If you were to tell someone that his or her values are very common, they might be offended. If you told them they had good common sense, they would feel happy.

Goal

→ Identify a common meaning, then explain differences and similarities for the word’s “in-class” meaning.

A

One common definition of “goal” is scoring a point in soccer or another sport. In class, a goal is something you want to achieve for yourself and it is measurable, specific and time-bound.

Honors: Sports are sometimes called co-curricular activities because they aren’t academic subjects, but contribute to learning.
