Fissure
A long narrow opening or line of breakage made by cracking or splitting.
Caldera
A large volcanic crater, especially one formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of the volcano.
Geothermal
Relating to or produced by the internal heat of the earth.
Geyser
A hot spring in which water intermittently boils, sending a tall column of water and steam into the air.
Hot spot
A place of significant activity, danger or violence.
Vent
An opening in the Earth’s surface through which volcanic materials escape.
Lahar
A destructive mudflow on the slopes of a volcano.
Natural hazard
Elements of the physical environment that are harmful to man.
Natural disaster
A natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life.
Supervolcano
A mega colossal volcano that erupts at least 1,000³ km of material.
