Blank verse
verse without rhyme, that uses iambic pentameter (10 syllables)
Couplet
of verse, usually in the same meter and joined by rhyme, that form a unit.
Narrative poem
Form of poem that tells a story, written in metered verse
Ballad
Poem arranged in quatrains with the rhyme scheme ABAB, usually narrative and tells a story
Heroic couplet
A stanza consisting of two rhyming lines in iambic pentameter (10 syllables each line)
Didactic poem
a form of poetry intended for instruction such as for knowledge or to teach.
Dramatic monologue
a poem in the form of a speech or narrative by an imagined person, in which the speaker inadvertently reveals aspects of their character while describing a particular situation or series of events.
Dramatic poem
any drama that is written in verse that is meant to be recited. It usually tells a story or refers to a situation. This would include closet drama, dramatic monologues, and rhyme verse.
Poetic foot (different types)
The amount of syllables in a poem/line. Aka; monometer
meter
Pattern of beats, number of poetic syllables. Combination of accented and non accented sounds
Emjambment
(in verse) the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, couplet, or stanza.
Extended metaphor
when an author exploits a single metaphor or analogy at length through multiple linked vehicles, tenors, and grounds throughout a poem or story.
Euphony
quality of being pleasing to the ear, especially through a harmonious combination of words.
Internal rhyme
a rhyme involving a word in the middle of a line and another at the end of the line or in the middle of the next.
Lyric poem
When a poet writes an emotional, rhyming poem, she can call it a lyric poem. Lyric poems have a musical rhythm
