Allegory
a story in which people,things, and happening have a hidden pr symbolic meaning. Allegory is use for teaching or explaining ideas,moral,principles,etc.
Alliteration
the repetition of consonants or sounds at the beginning of two or more words in a line of poetry
Allusion
an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning or explicitly; an indirect or passing reference
Ambiguity
A statement of sentence which could have more than one possible interpretation
Antithesis
Literal meaning opposite, is a rhetorical device in which two opposite ideas are put together in a sentence to achieve a contrasting effect
Colloquial
The characteristics of writing that seeks the effort of informal spoken language as distinct from formal or literary English
Connotation
Noun(1):what you ,use know in order to determine the reference of an expression
Noun(2): an idea that is implied or suggested
Denotation
The exact, literal meaning of a word
Diction
Word choice, or general character of the language used by the author
Extended metaphor
Metaphor that is developed in great detail. The author takes a single meta-hour and employs it at length, using various subjects, images, ideas and situations
Figurative language
language that’s intended to create an image, association, or other effect in the mind of the listener or reader that goes beyond the literal meaning or expected use of the words involved.
Genre
a category of artistic composition, as in musical,or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content
Imagery
visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work.
Inference/infer
an idea or conclusion that’s drawn from evidence and reasoning. An inference is an educated guess.
Irony/ironical (verbal, situational, dramatic)
Verbal irony occurs when a speaker’s intention is the opposite of what he or she is saying
Situational irony occurs when the actual result of a situation is totally different from what you’d expect the result to be
Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows a key piece of information that a character in a play, movie or novel does not
