Vocabulary-Chapter One Flashcards
Homeostasis
Body’s maintenance of a stable internal environment.
Positive Feedback
Process that moves conditions AWAY from homeostasis; rarely occurring, like childbirth
Homeostatic Mechanism
Number of self-regulating control systems
Receptor
Provides information about specific conditions/stimuli in internal environment.
Control center
Brain
Effector
Muscles/glands that cause responses that alter conditions in internal environment.
Negative Feedback
Deviation from set point is lessened, as is response from effectors. Moves conditions toward homeostasis.
Anatomy
Study of structure
Physiology
Studies functions of body parts; what they do and how they do it.
Chemical Element
Consists of atoms
Organelle
Contained within cells and carry out specific duties.
Composed of assemblies of large molecules, including proteins, carbs, lipids, and nucleuc acid.
Cell
Basic unit of structure and function. All cells carry same characteristics and must have certain requirements to stay alive
Tissue
Specialized cells that assemble into layers or masses that have specific instructions
Organ
Groups of tissues that perform specialized functions
System
Groups of organs that function closely together
