scherzo and trio
Scherzo and trio in Italian means ‘jest’ or ‘joke’. Beethoven used scherzo and trio instead of menuet and trio as the third movements in the sonata cycle. Scherzo and trio is more dramatic than the elegant menuet. Scherzo & trio has a contrasting middle section (trio) so it’s a ABA form (Scherzo-trio-scherzo).
