What is the poem about
A critique of society and its indiferent consumption of war and the effect it has on individuals
In his dark room he is finally alone
‘dark room’ this is a room where photos are developed wich is a slow and careful process
This implies relief as he is finnaly away from all the horrible things he witnessed
He remembers the cries of this man’s wife, how he sought approval without words
‘without words’ he is trying not to get involved by avoiding talking to the woman so he isn’t a part of the conflict as it may seem like he is supporting one of the sides.
He is sort of raising the dead as he prints the photos and remembers her cry
A hundred agonies in black and white
‘black and white’ newspaper, takes hundreds of photos yet only a few are picked made off of artistic merrit
Prick with tears between bath and prelunch beers
People are only sad about these things for a very little amount of time and then they ge ton with thier life’s and forget as it doesn’t effect them - people don’t care
Stares impassively at where he earns his living an they do not care
‘they’ refers to everybody
Ambiguous - don’t know if he is looking down on conflict zone or on his home yet both don’t care about the conflict
It doesn’t matter weather country is in conflict or not, no one cares
