Suez Canal

A

On the 26th of July 1956, the Egyptian President announced the nationalization of the Suez Canal Company, a joint British-French enterprise that had owned and operated the Suez Canal since 1869.

This led to tension between Egypt, Britain and France. The US refused to support the Egyptian government, but the USSR did. Khrushchev threatened to attack Western European with Nuclear Missiles if the Israeli-French- British forces did not withdraw.

Afghanistan

A

The Afghanistan War, also referred to as the War in Afghanistan or Operation Enduring Freedom, is the period between 2001 - 2014 in which the United States of America invaded Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Although combat operations in Afghanistan were formally ended in 2014 with a planned withdrawal of US troops, conflict in Afghanistan continues due to the resilience of the Taliban and the emergence of the Islamic State

Trump increased these troops.

Korea

A

1950-1953
The Korean War was fought between South Korea and the communist North.

The USSR backed the North and the US backed the South.

Originally the US was only defending South Korea, but after the first summer Truman went on the offensive and turned his attention to liberating NK from communism.

The war ended with a treaty, both countries remain independent and the border remains at the 38th parallel.

Vietnam

A

During WW2, Japan was in control. After the war there was a power vacuum which the communist Ho Chi Minh wanted to step in to, but the allies wanted Vietnam to go back to the French. Ho Chi Minh rebelled, the US tried to help the French by sending aid in the 1950s.

The French left in 1954 and the country was divided.
The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution passed in the US, Tet Offensive

Nixon ends involvement in the war, starting to withdraw troops in 1969, negotiating a ceasefire in 1973 and by the end of 1975, South Vietnam was surrendered to North Vietnam.

A genocide in Cambodia soon followed, as Cambodia had been a route to get weapons into the North from China.

A

9/11 occurred
March 20th, 2003, a coalition led by the US invaded under the assumption that Saddam Hussein was developing WMD

Bombing and fast moving troops, ‘shock and awe’
Saddam Hussein was captured and put on trial. Executed in 2006.

No WMD. Continued to occupy. Country was in chaos without Saddam and government.

The Iraq War officially ended on December 18, 2011 with the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops.
