Water Flashcards
What is the drainage basin
The area of land drained by a river
What is the watershed
The edge of highland surrounding a drainage basin. It marks the boundary between the two drainage basin
What is the source
The start of a river
What is the confluence
A point which two river meet or a stream joins
What is the tributary
A stream or small river which joins a large river or stream
What is the mouth of a river
The point where the river comes to an end unusually when entering the sea
What is deposition
When a river loses energy it will drop and deposit some of the material it’s carrying
What are the 4 main forms of river erosion
Hydraulic action
Abrasion
Attrition
Solution
What is hydraulic action
When air is trapped in the crack and crevices. The pressure weakens the banks and gradually wears it away
What is abrasion
Rocks carries along by the river wear down the river bed and bank
What is attrition
Rocks being carried by the rive smash together and break into smaller, smoother and rounder particles
What is solution
Soluble particles are dissolved into the river water and carried along
What are the 4 different river transport processes?
Solution
Suspension
Saltation
Traction
What is suspension
Fine light materials carried along in the water
What is saltation
Small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed
