Wave Effects & Wave Properties Flashcards
Compressions
Regions of high pressure due to particles being close together
Rest position
The undisturbed position of particles of fields when they are not vibrating
Displacement
How far a point on the wave is from the middle line
Peak
The highest point above the rest position
Trough
The lowest part of the wave
Amplitude
The maximum amount of vibration measured from the middle position of the wave
Wavelength
The distance between 2 corresponding points on a wave in metres
Time period
The time taken for a full cycle of the wave , usually measured from peak to peak or trough to trough
Frequency
Number of waves produced in one sec in Hz
Transverse waves
Where the direction of vibration is at right angles of the wave
Longitudinal waves
Where the direction of vibration is same if that wave ( parallel )
Superposition
When 2 water waves meet , their displacements combine briefly , then the waves carry on as they were
Crest
Highest part of the wave
Specular reflection
When each light ray reflects off the same angle
Diffuse reflection
When the light reflects back in lots of different directions
Law of reflection
Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
Angle i = Angle r
Normal
A line at a right angle to the surface
Refraction
When light bends as it crosses a boundary
Medium
Any substance that light travels through
Pinhole camera
Simple camera
Cornea
The transparent part of the eye that covers the iris and pupil and allows light to enter the inside
Iris
Coloured part of the eye
Absorber
Anything that absorbs energy carried by light waves
White light
Mixture of colours
Frequency of light
Number of complete waves that pass a point per second
