waves Flashcards
defintion of a wave
is a transfer of energy from one place to another through vibrating. oscillations
difference of a longitudinal wave and a transverse wave
longitudinal- waves are parallel to the direction. go backwards and forwards
while transverse waves are perpendicular go up and down
give examples of a longitudinal wave
sound waves, ( made up of compression and rarefaction)
p waves in eathquakes
give examples of transverse waves
EM waves, water waves and light
what is an EM wave?
a wave that needs no material to vibrate energy through
what does wavelength measure?
how long it takes for one wave to pass. called a time period. measured from peak to peak or trough from trough
what is frequecny?
how many waves happen in one second. measured in Hz
what is i= r?
the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection
what is specular reflection?
when the reflection is clear and bright because of the shiny surface
refraction defintion
when light passing through a an object changes the direction of the light. so the angle of incidence isn’t equal to the angle of reflection
amplitude defintion
amplitude measures the displacement from the equilibrium line.
from the peak to the equilibrium line or from the trough.
what is an ultrasound?
waves that have Hz of over 20,000
