Waves Flashcards
What is progressive wave?
movement of disturbance from source which transfers energy from source to places around it by means of vibrations or oscillations.
Wavelength?
Distance between two consecutive points on a wave which are in phase.
Speed of a wave definition?
v=f(wavelength), speed of propagation of the energy
Transverse Wave?
Wave in which the oscillations of the wave particles is perpendicular to the direction of the propagation of the wave
Longitudinal Wave?
Wave in which the oscillations of the wave particles are parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.
What is intensity?
Rate of energy flow per unit time per unit cross-sectional area perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation
Formula for intensity?
Power divided by area, energy divided by time x area
For wave sources, rs between intensity and amplitude?
Intensity proportional to amplitude ^2
Meaning of polarisation?
When oscillations of the wave particles are only in one direction in a plane normal to the direction of propagation
