Waves Flashcards
The number of waves produced each second
Frequency
The distance between two successive waves
Usually measured in metres
Wavelength
The maximum distance a wave extends beyond its middle position
Amplitude
They transfer energy from one place to another
Waves
Produced when something vibrates, moving back and forth very quickly
Sound waves
A region of high pressure where particles are close together
compressions
Spread out areas in a wave
Rarefactions
Transverse electric and magnetic fields positioned at right angles to each other and travelling through empty space at the speed of light.
Electromagnetic wave
A wave in which its particles vibrate in the same direction as the wave
Longitudinal Wave
Extremely high-energy electromagnetic radiation emitted by radioactive materials
Gamma rays
A wave in which its particles vibrate at right angles to the direction of motion of the wave
Transverse Wave
The name for the lowest possible temperature (-273° C)
Absolute zero
Movement of heat in electromagnetic waves
Radiation
A measure of kinetic energy of particles in a substance that results in how hot or cold the substance is
Temperature
An instrument used to measure temperature
Thermometer
