Waves Flashcards
What is reflection?
The change in direction of a wave front at an interference between two different media
What is refraction?
The bending/changing of waves as they move from one medium to another
How do circular waves reflect when they hit a circular barrier?
Reflects back as straight waves
How do circular waves reflect when they hit a straight barrier?
Reflected as circular waves
EXTRA:
- the reflected waves look like they started an equal distance behind the barrier
How do straight waves reflect when they hit a straight barrier?
They reflect straight back
How do straight waves reflect when they hit a curved barrier?
Reflects back as circular wave
What are the laws of reflection?
- The angle of incidence=the angle of reflection
2. The incident ray, reflected ray, and the normal all lie on the same plane
What is the speed of light?
3.0 x 10^8 m/s
What are three sources of light?
- sun
- fire
- lightbulb
How do we know light travels in a straight line?
Light doesn’t spread out
How do we see images?
Light is reflected off of the object and into the eye
What is the size of an image in a plane mirror?
Same size
What is the orientation/attitude of an image in the plane mirror?
Upright
What is the location of an image in a plane mirror?
Same distance behind as it is in front
What type of image is shown in a plane mirror?
Virtual
