Waves Flashcards
Waves in nature
Sound (seismic) waves Visible light waves Electromagnetic Water waves Microwaves
All waves transfer …………
Energy
Waves are made up of -
Vibrations/ oscillations of particles or electromagnetic fields
Longitudinal waves -how do the vibrations occur?
The particle vibrations occur in the same direction as the wave is travelling.
I.e. the oscillations are parallel to the direction of travel.
Examples of a longitudinal wave
Sound
Seismic waves from earthquakes
Can sound travel in a vacuum? Explain answer.
No because there are no particles to vibrate
Transverse waves - describe.
The vibrations / particles move at right angles to the direction the wave is travelling in.
I.e the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of travel.
Name some transverse waves
Light & all other electromagnetic waves such as ( radio waves).
Water waves.
When a Guitar string is played.
Radio waves in a vacuum
Can travel through a vacuum (like sound) because they create an electromagnetic field for themselves accommodating their passage
Parts of a wave
What is a wavelength of a wave
How is it measured?
The wave length is simply the length of the wave.
Measured from peak to peak, trough to trough
Usually measured in metres (m) and has symbol lambda
pronounced Lam-du
