Weather Flashcards
Describe rain
drops of water .5mm
Describe sleet
ice particles <.5mm
Describe hail
ice pellets >.5 mm
How do clouds form?
when water vapor in the air condenses on tiny particles in the air–forming a cloud
What are trade winds?
winds that blow towards the equator between 0 & 30 degrees (north or south latitudes). Sailors relied on these winds to carry valuable cargo.
What is hail?
a round pellet of ice larger than .5 mm in diameter, Forms only inside cumulonimbus clouds during thunderstorms.
How are rain, sleet and hail similar and different?
They are all made of water. Their sizes are different, while one is water, the others are solid.
Explain dew point
Since cooler air cannot hold as much water as warmer air, water begins to condense into drops of water or ice. The temperature at which this condensation happens is called the dew point.
What are prevailing westerlies?
Winds that blow towards the Poles between 30 & 60 degrees (north & south latitudes). These winds play an important part in the US weather.
What is a wind vane?
used to measure wind direction
Order these from smallest to largest (hail, rain, sleet)
rain, sleet, hail
What 2 factors are required for condensation to occur and form clouds?
- cooling of air to dew point (or below) 2. presence of particles in the air.
What are the polar easterlies?
these winds blow towards lower latitudes between 60 & 90 (north or south latitudes)
Which heats up faster? Land or water
Land warms up faster than water.
What is a psychrometer?
Measures relative humidity with an instrument with 2 thermometers, a wet bulb thermometer and a dry bulb thermometer.
