Weather Factors Flashcards
What causes wind?
Uneven heating and a change in air pressure
Three ways heat is transferred?
Conduction (touch)
Radiation (sun waves)
Convection (hot air goes up cold air goes down)
Which is more dense, warm air or cold air?
Cold
When you have a sea breeze, which dude us hotter?
Land
Land breeze, which side is hotter?
Sea
Which warms up faster (and cools off faster)—land or water?
Land
What is an anemometer?
Measures wind speed
What is the Coriolis effect?
Caused by rotation of the earth
What is a psychrometer?
Measures humidity (dry bulb and wet bulb)
Why does liquid water form on the outside of a glass of ice water on a warm day?
Temp. around glass is below dew point.
How does a cloud form?
Warm air rises and expands (cools below dew pt.) water vapor condenses to form a cloud on condensation nuclei.
Name and describe the three main types of clouds.
Cumulus-fluffy
Stratus-layered
Cirrus-wispy
What is a cumulonimbus cloud?
Thunderhead
What is precipitation?
