Weathering & Erosion Vocab Flashcards
Erosion
the process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents.
Weathering
To wear away or change the appearance or texture of (something) by long exposure to the air.
Mechanical Weathering
Weathering in which rock is physically broken in to smaller pieces
Chemical weathering
The process that breaks down rock through chemical changes
Permeable
A rock the is full of tiny connected air spaces
Abrasion
the process of scraping or wearing away rock
Ice wedging
Ice Wedging is when there is a little crack in a rock and water gets in it. The water freezes and breaks the crack even bigger (it expands when it turns to ice). Then it melts and more water gets in it. That freezes and breaks the rock up even more. It keeps doing that until the rock breaks.
Oxidation
Iron mixes with with oxygen in the presence of water
Carbonic Acid
a very weak acid formed in solution when carbon dioxide dissolves in water.
Acid rain
Acid rain is rain that has been made acidic by certain pollutants in the air
Carbon dioxide
A colorless, odorless gas that we breath
Climate
Temperature and moisture have the bigest effect on weathering and erosion
