a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society causing widespread human, material, economic, or environmental losses which exceed the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources
disaster
the potential disaster losses in lives, health status, livelihoods, assets and services,which could occur to a particular community or a society over some specified future time period
disaster risk
probability of an occurrence of an event at a certain magnitude, which has the potential to harm anything that happens to be along its way
hazard
Hazards arise from a variety of sources (3)
- geological, hydrological, hydro metrological
- hazards that results from man made activities
- combination of both man-made and natural activities
comprises negative conditions determined by physical, social, economic, and environmental factors or processes, which increase the susceptibility of a community, system or asset to the impact of hazards
vulnerability
people, properties, livelihood and private and public services, economic and social activities and networks that are potentially threatened by a harmful event.
elements at risk
positive resources and abilities which are helpful to individuals, families and community in mitigating, preparing for, responding to and recovering from the hazard impact
capacities
What are different risk factors underlying disasters? (6)

- psychological factors
- socio-cultural factors such as religion, social status
- economic factors such as liabilities and assets
