What is Peristalsis
A series of wave-like muscle contractions that move along the digestive tract
What is Peristalsis affected by?
age, mobility, stress, infection of GI tract, Crohn’s, allergies.
When should laxatives and enemas be used?
As a last resort
What promotes good bowel health for any age?
fiber, proper fluids, and activity
What does the term constipation mean?
Straining or difficult passage of stool
What is fecal impaction a result of?
Unrelieved constipation
What are symptoms of fecal impaction?
abdominal pain, relies, urinary retention, confusion
What can diarrhea cause?
electrolyte imbalances and fluid loss
Incontinence
the inability to control the passage of feces
What does Flatulence mean
gas which is caused by food or medications
Hemorrhoids
Dilated enlarged veins in the rectum
What causes hemorrhoids
excessive straining or constipation
Anal fissures
Cracks and tears in the rectum and anal canal
What causes anal fissures
itching and bleeding
