Methemoglobinemia

A

Symptoms:

(1) Cyanosis
(2) Chocolate-colored blood

Note: Pa02 normal, but Sa02 reduced

Treatment:
IV Methylene blue

Etiology:
Oxidation of heme from Fe2+ to Fe3+

Pathogenesis:
Sulfa drugs, nitrate drugs, or in newborns, the heme is oxidized to Fe3+, preventing O2 carrying capacity of RBC
