week 12 Flashcards
What is measurement?
Measurement is the ‘assignment of a numerical value to an attribute of an object’.
Explain the measurable attribute of length.
Length
The measurement of something from A to B.
One dimensional
Base unit is meters. Can be measured in mm, cm, m, km etc.
Explain the measurable attribute of perimeter.
- The distance around a two-dimensional shape.
- The length of all of the edges around a two-dimensional shape.
- The boundary of a two-dimensional shape that encloses the shape
- Measures length.
Explain the measurable attribute of area.
Area
- The size of a surface.
- The amount of space inside the boundary of a flat object.
- Area of all of the surfaces of an object; the number of square units needed to cover the surface of an object.
Explain the measurable attribute of surface area.
- Area of all of the surfaces of an object.
- The number of square units needed to cover the surface of an object.
Explain the measurable attribute of mass.
The measure of how much matter is in an object.
The mass of an object remains constant (grams, kilograms etc)
Weight can change depending on where you are (Such as the Moon) However, mass stays the same
Explain the measurable attribute of weight.
The force of gravity applied to an object.
The gravitational pull
The downward force caused by gravity
The weight of an object will vary in different locations.
Explain the measurable attribute of Volume
The amount of space an item or substance occupies.
The amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies.
Explain the measurable attribute of capacity
The amount of liquid a container can hold.
Can also be described in cubic units and litres
what is PI
Pi is the relationship between the diameter and circumference of a circle (diameter will go around the circumference 3 and a bit times, approximately 3.14).
