Q

1 Peter chapter 1 and 2 give us insights regarding our response to suffering in life, in faith, and under the hand of oppressive people or rulers. Assumed by Peter and his readers, but not necessarily understood by modern readers like us, is that such powers and forces of that day were not easily undone, and the Christian needed to consider all of this when choosing how to respond to suffering of that kind. How could we summarize what Peter says to do in regard to this kind of personal suffering?

A

Rejoice in suffering and submit to powerful people who have been placed over you, understanding that you are fellowshipping with Jesus, who also suffered under powers, and did so for our sake.

Q

In class, and in light of Peter’s teaching, we discussed the nature of submission to oppressive powers as a call of God when there is nothing that can be done to break free. History tells us (including biblical history) that there are times when God’s people may be called to rise up and break free of oppression, however. What examples do we have from Scripture itself that bring a helpful “balance” to Peter’s teaching on submission?

A
  • Moses and the Israelites -the exodus from Egypt
  • Joshua and the Israelites fighting oppressive and wicked military and political powers (and people) of their day
  • King David and the Israelites fighting oppressive and wicked military and political powers of their day.
  • Jesus resisting the religious elitists of Israel.
  • Paul encouraging freedom wherever and whenever it can be taken (1 Cor. 7:21)
  • God himself, behind all these things and empowering those who sought freedom.

2 Peter chapter 1 provides important insights for ongoing Christian life and discipleship. We have there a source of powerful encouragement about the change that takes place in us as believers. See 2 Peter 1:3-11, what best describes that encouraging word:

A

The power and promises of God are at work is us because we now participate in God’s own nature of holiness. As we move through life as a Christian, with great care regarding godliness, we are given power to bear spiritual fruit for the Lord as we prepare for eternity.
