Narcissus and Echo

A

Echo was a nymph, cursed by the Gods to only repeat the last words of others. One day, she fell in love with Narcissus after encountering him in the woods, and despite his rejection, she longed for him.

One day while hunting, Narcissus saw his reflection in water, falling in love. He declares his love to the Gods, that they would waste away and die together.

Echo was a witness to it all.

A

Two lovers in Babylon, their families refused their desire to wed. They whisper their love for one another through a crack in the wall. Deciding to meet at a mulberry tree, Thisbe runs from a bloodmouthed lion, leaving behind her cloak. Pyramus is horrified to assume that the lion had killed his lover. He kill’s himself, falling on his sword. Thisbe finds his body, and later stabs herself with the same sword.

Orpheus died at the hands of the Maenad, female followers of Dionysus. He was playing a mourning song, calling for death. He was killed by the Maenads in a frenzied mood. They tore him apart, though his head remained intact and still sang as it floated in the water.

A

King Midas found the foster father of Dionysus, and treated him well, then returned him to the God. As a favour, Midas could choose whatever he wanted; he chose the ability to turn everything into gold. However, he found that upon embracing his daughter, she turned into a golden statue. He begged the God for the gift to be undone, and told him to bathe in the river Pactolus. He did so, the river’s sand turned into gold.

Hades had given Proserpine pomegranate seeds (food of the dead), which made it so that she could only leave for a time. She spend 9 months with her mother a year, then 3 with Hades.
