what is colonialism?
establishment, exploitation, maintenance, acquisition and expansion of colonies in one territory by people from another territory.
A practice of domination, involving the subjugation of one people to another.
how did the wars and great depression impact migration?
Number of immigration has droped since because of war and great depression
Canada experience a population decline
More people left and died than entired
Major push factor = economy
Couldn’t find a job and needed to survive
`After 70s the population became a growing one again
Who were the main migrants of early canada?
Pre-1900 – british and american
Early 1900 – eastern european and central started flooding
After mid 1900 – visible minorities

Canadian wants to redistribute to smaller towns, they try to give them job oppurtunities there
But immigrants want to settle where they hae strong community ties
So there are challenges to get them to move
What were the chainging policies of migration?
Point system – 1967, Have to hit a certain score, point to be a qualified candidate
Family reunification - Bringing the family together
Incorporation of humanitarian class
Refugees who came seeking asylum
Canada Sets a target for annual immigration
MOST IMPORTANT POINT – before 1962 it was basically just about skin colour, and afterwards it attempted to be objective
What is the catch-up hypothesis?
Immigrants over time diminish their social and economic barriers
After time the become familiar with society, the employment process, and they gradually catch up and close the gap between them and Canadian born citizens
