Explain guest vs. colonial workers, and why they were needed

A

After ww2 a lot of people tried to rebuild population
A lot of western european countries tried to recruit foreigners to help rebuild their countries through 2 channels
Guest workers and colonial workers
hired to satisfy the labour shortages
Manual labours
Construction workers
They were first temporary migrant workers and eventually tried to seek permanent residency
Also tried to bring family over, family reunification
Shows how their status changes over time from temporary to permanent residency
Rights change
Bargain more from receiving countries
Guest workers

What is temporary labour, and who was the first to conduct it?

A

German government first to do this
First looked into Southern Europe
Chose these people because they thought they are more likely to assimilate into their system
Had racial preference
Reached a deal with other countries in southern Europe, and had a multinational agreement
Not expected to stay in Germany permanently
Those workers successfully applied for permanent residency

2 Tiers – Primary, and Secondary labour market

What happend to diversity in europe?

A

All of a sudden after 1945 predominantly homogenous societies in Western Europe became increasingly diverse
Because of the flow of migration that introduced difference into the host country, social inequality and tension ensued
Anti-immigration sentiment
-Non-white Immigrants were seen as ‘waves, floods, swamping’ -Past and present time
