week1-4 Flashcards
Define EBN or evidence-based health care practice?
Term used to describe process that nurses use to make clinical decisions and answer
clinical questions based on the best available research evidence, their clinical expertise
and patient preferences in the context of existing resources
When/why do we (as nurses) need to seek out evidence?
Something out of ordinary
Pt with characteristic not seen before eg cultural/religious
Outcomes might differ in 2 pts with no obvious reason
Developing policies/standards
What is the purpose of an abstract?
Summarizes the report
Will explain- why research conducted, where and how done and with whom, what it
found, what are implications
Why might an abstract be useful for us to read?
Use to see if it answers your question
Don’t have to read whole article- helps with lit search, saves ti
Qualitative:
Focus on understanding humans within context of their lives- tries to build complete
picture of thing of interest
Involves collecting info as expressed by people
Focus on subjective info-don’t try to predict/control thing looking at
Quantitative:
Focus on understanding/breaking down thing/phenom into parts to see how they do or
don’t connect
Collect info that is specific and limited to what is being studied
Objective info- can predict and control
What is a useful evaluation tool for assessing websites? State the acronym and what each letter stands for.
CRAAP
Currency: The timeliness of the information.
Relevance: The importance of the information for your needs.
Authority: The source of the information.
Accuracy: The reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of the content.
Purpose: The reason the information exists.
Why is it important to evaluate databases & search engines?
There are two main reasons:
To Identify the best tool for the search you need to make
To find how to use them effectively
What five questions might you ask when assessing the quality of websites?
1) Author: Is the author:
2) Host site: Who is hosting the site?
3) Audience: Is the page written for:
4) Currency: is the site up to date?
5) Content: is it any good?
What do the letters PICO(T) stand for?
Population Intervention Comparison Outcome Timeframe
List three considerations that you would take into account before you used the
results of a study to change your clinical practice. Briefly explain why these are important
Is the research is relevant and useful to your clinical problem
Evaluate research paper- has it been “done properly”
Pt preference
Why is EBP important to health professionals?
- Accountability
- Professional standards
- Clinical competence and safety
- Improved practice and service
- Applying research to the real world of work
What are the five major components of research reports (articles), not including title
and references?
Abstract Introduction/background/literature review Methods Results Discussion (includes conclusions)
What would you expect to find in the methods section of a research study?
Research design (eg, qualitative, quantitative)
Sample (participant) selection from population group
Procedures and data collection methods
Data analysis
What would you expect to find in the discussion section of a research study?
A summary of key findings
Comparisons of these findings with previous findings
Speculation about the reasons for the results of the study
Implications for practice
