Q

How does the COVID-19 Vaccine Work?

A

Vaccine contains mRNA that is made with the genetic code of the spike proteins and when injected into our bodies, the vaccine is “teaching” our own cells to make these spike proteins that are found on the surface of the COVID-19 virus. This process stimulates an immune response that allows our bodies to produce antibodies specific to the COVID-19 virus. Thus, if we were to get infected, our bodies now recognize and are equipped to fight the virus.

Q

What is the difference between equity and equality?

A

Equity is recognizing that each individual is coming from a unique background and as such has unique needs in order to be at the same level as others and thus reach the same outcome. Equality on the other hand is when individuals are provided with the same resources or opportunities, regardless of their needs.

Q

What is implicit bias? How has it affected your interactions or that of someone else?

A

Implicit bias is a type of bias that occurs automatically and unintentionally. When I studied abroad in Tokyo, I was very young (about 12 yrs old) and when I saw that us the students had to clean the whole school after class, my implicit bias and reaction was a negative one. However, as I partook in cleaning the school with my classmates over time, I realized it was not only a bonding activity with them, we were being taught how to be part of a team and be responsible from a very young age. Experiences like these really help to remind me to continue challenging implicit biases when they come up as we never really know the full story or experience.
