Chapter 9
Heathcliff IS necessary, and an ever-present solidity
Declarative exclamation
Her love for Linton is ‘foliage’ changing format, crumples, temporary, but has the benefits of social superiority/status.
H = rocks - unchangeable format, - he is permanent in her mind & soul
There is no meaning without him.
“He’s more myself than I am” / “Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same” / “Linton’s is as different as a moonbeam from lightening or frost from fire”. / “Nelly I am Heathcliff” (Cathy)
Chapter 9
Oxymoron - incompatibility, cannot exist together, one overpowers the other, lightening = destructive force.
Loves Heathcliff inside out, for all of his flaws (“souls”) she has found comfort & unfortunate compatibility.
Her passionate/true self - exclamative love.
“Here and here!” / “striking one hand on her forehead and the other on her breast” / “in my soul and in my heart, I’m convinced I’m wrong!”
Deep inner spiritual connection, no hesitation, natural/innate reaction.
Her love for Edgar is conventially influenced = not natural, forced.
