Woods Flashcards
Hardwoods
Most hardwoods are deciduous and drop their leaves in winter. These trees are slow growing and grow mainly in warmer climates. They produce mainly hardwoods. Hardwoods are generally hard to work and are used to make expensive furniture.
Softwoods
These trees are faster growing trees and have needles instead of leaves. They are usually evergreen i.e.: they keep their needles all year round. They mainly grow in the colder regions of the world. Evergreen trees produce mainly softwoods. Softwood is easy to work and is used to make inexpensive furniture, structures and frames.
Deciduous trees
These include hardwoods such as beech and mahogany. They are broad leafed trees and in winter the leaves fall off. The seeds are enclosed in fruit e.g. apple, acorn. They grow in warmer temperate climates, slow growing and expensive
Coniferous trees
These include softwoods such as pine and cedar. They have needles instead of broad leaves and are cone bearing. Most softwood trees are evergreens which means they keep their needles all the year round. They grow mainly in colder and cooler temperate climate. They grow quickly (20-30 years) and are therefore cheaper, softer and easier to work than hardwoods.
