Nouns
What is a proper noun?
Refers to names of people and places
always has a capital letter
e.g. James, London

What is an abstract noun?
Refers to states, feelings and concepts that do not have a physical existence
e.g. love, anger

What is a concrete noun?
can be countable or non-countable
Refers to objects that have physical existence

What is a countable concrete noun?
It can be pluralised
e.g. cup(s)

What is a non-countable concrete noun?
Do not take the pluralised form
e.g. sheep, furniture
Verbs
What is a material verb?
Shows actions or events
e.g. hit, jump, wash, build

What is a relational verb?
Identify properties/ show states of being
e.g. be, appear, seem, become

What is a mental verb?
mental= mind
Show internal processes
e.g. think, believe, wish

What is a verbal verb?
verbal= speech
Show external processes of communicating through speech
e.g. say, shout, scream, whisper

What is a transitive verb?
Verb that requires a direct object, which is a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase that follows the verb and completes sentence meaning
has an object to recieve the action
e.g. ‘I bake some cookies.’- ‘bake’ is the trandsitive verb- it shows what is being done with the cookies (noun)

What is an intransitive verb?
opposite of a transitive verb
Does not require direct object (noun, pronoun, noun phrase) to indicate the person or thing acted upon
does not have an object receiving the action
e.g. ‘I laugh’- ‘laugh’ does not need an object in order to complete

What is an auxiliary verb?
Helping verbs- shows time, tense and possibility
They do not work as main verbs, hence why they’re ‘helping’ verbs
e.g. ‘be’ verbs, have and do
“I have seen a movie.” / “Alex is going to school.”

What is a base adjective/ adverb?
The basic form of an adjective or adverb, modifying another word.
e.g. bid, interesting, carefully

What is a comparitive adjective/ adverb?
A form used to compare two instances either adding ‘er’ or using ‘more’
e.g. The parcel was bigger/ He read more carefully

What is a superlative adjective/ adverb?
A form used to compare two instances identifying a best example
adding ‘est’ (biggest)
e.g. That was the biggest parcel./ That was the most interesting game.
