Assimilation vs. Accommodation
are the state standards for Texas public schools from kindergarten to year 12. They detail the curriculum requirements for every course. State-mandated standardized tests measure acquisition of specific knowledge and skills outlined in this curriculum.
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
has been a leader among education associations in the development of Ethical Principles, Professional Practice Standards, and Preparation Standards. CEC has and continues to use a research-based collaborative process that ensures that its standards are current, research-based, and fully address the knowledge and skills special educators must master.
Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Standard
is a four-part (A-D) piece of American legislation that ensures students with a disability are provided with Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that is tailored to their individual needs. IDEA covers kids from birth through high school graduation or age 21 (whichever comes first).
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
is the ability to learn from and relate respectfully with people of your own culture as well as those from other cultures.
Culturally-responsive teaching
Provides students with many different ways to access and learn content within the general education curriculum.
Differentiated instruction
Provision within IDEA that requires every eligible student with a disability be included in public education. The Supreme Court declared that an appropriate education consists of “specially designed instruction and related services that are “individually designed” to provide “educational benefit.”
Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
students with disabilities are to be educated with their peers without disabilities to the maximum extent appropriate.
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
Instructional programs that work for all students to the greatest extent possible without the needs for adaption or specialized design.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
the name for the IEP Team made up of a student’s parents and school staff who meet at least annually to: decide whether or not the student has an eligible disability, determine what special education and related services will be provided, and develop an individual education program (IEP).
Admission, Review, Dismissal (ARD)
A written statement for each child with a disability that is developed, reviewed and revised by the ARD committee, of which parents are active members. The IEP includes the student’s present levels of academic achievement and functional performance, participation in State and district-wide assessments, transition services, annual goals, special factors, special education, related services, supplementary aids and services, extended school year services, and least restrictive environment.
Individualized Educational Program/Plan (IEP)
An early intervention model for addressing the learning needs of all students through a continuum of services which provide: high quality instruction and scientific, research-based, tiered intervention strategies aligned with individual student need;
frequent monitoring of student progress to make results based academic or behavioral decisions; data-based school improvement; and the application of student response date to important educational decisions (such as those regarding placement, intervention, curriculum, and instructional goals and methodologies).
Response to Intervention (RtI)
U.S. federal law that reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act originally passed in 1965. NCLB expanded the federal role in public education, mandated state assessments to measure students academic performance on an annual basis, increased state accountability for students learning by measuring schools’ annual yearly progress (AYP) and prescribed teacher qualifications.
No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
is the 2015 reauthorization of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the national education law that provides for equal opportunity for all students. The ESSA replaced the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), the 2001 re-authorization of the ESEA.
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
Is a type of therapy that focuses on improving specific behaviors, such as social skills, communication, reading, and academics as well as adaptive learning skills, such as fine motor dexterity, hygiene, grooming, domestic capabilities, punctuality, and job competence. It is effective for children and adults with psychological disorders in a variety of settings, including schools, workplaces, homes, and clinics. It has also been shown that consistent ABA can significantly improve behaviors and skills and decrease the need for special services.
