Q
  1. How/why did the Cold War begin?
A

The start of the cold war can be traced back to the end of World War II. Although the United States and the Soviet Union were allies throughout the war, their contrasting views at the end of World War II lead to a clash of interests. Their ideological clash stems from their opposing views on capitalism and communism, as both parties sought to expand their influence over neighboring countries. The western world started to dislike communism since they feared its inevitable expansion, inventing the domino theory and establishing the foreign policy: Truman doctrine. In addition, the creation of nuclear weapons in the arms race only increased tensions.

Q
  1. Who was responsible for escalating the Cold War?
A

I believe that the Truman doctrine and the founding of NATO were responsible for the escalation of the Cold War. The Truman doctrine escalated the Cold War by involving the United States in conflicts that did not necessarily involve their country as they feared communism around the world. NATO was formed to confront the Warsaw Pact, as the Warsaw Pact was formed to battle capitalism in Eastern Europe, while NATO’s call was to fight against the communist Soviet Union; their ideologies were entirely opposite, and they sought to annihilate each other should conflict break out.

Q
  1. How did the Cold War affect United States foreign and domestic policy
A

The Cold War affected US foreign policy by establishing a policy of containment in order to isolate and contain the growth of communism. This resulted in the United States’ involvement in the Korean and Vietnam wars, as well as their participation in the arms race. The Cold War had an impact on the economy because it led to the government spending money on military defense and expansion in order to counter a potential Soviet Union attack, as well as to keep up in all the wars they participated in to prevent the spread of communism.

Q
  1. What were the causes of the Cuban Missile Crisis?
A

The Cuban missile was caused by a combination of factors involved in the United States, the Soviet Union in Cuba. Nikita Krishchev and Fidel Castro came to a secret agreement that the Soviet Union would place their missiles in Cuba, to deter the US from invading even though they were not allowed to send middles to Cuba. Eventually US U-2 spy planes were sent to Cuba and took photo evidence of nuclear weapons being constructed in cuba. After a US U-2 jet was shot down over Cuba and Kennedy prepared an attack on Cuba while the two nations tried to search for any possible agreement a member of the US government eventually secretly met up with a member of the Cuban government to which they came to an agreement, thus preventing a potential nuclear war.
