ww1 xrays '1895 Flashcards
1895
wilhelm rontgen was experimenting with rays in a test tube covered with black paper when he realised that the rays actually passed through the paper
realised that rays could go through flesh but not bone
what could the xrays be used to find?
objects lodged in flesh and bone like:
- bullets
- shrapnel
without causing harmful and invasive exploratory surgery
what happened with their use by the end of ww1?
the mobile x-ray machines and static ones at ccs were proving their worth as they were being consistently used
name their problems and solutions:
took several minutes to take = soldiers would be sedated with the medicine available
they needed heating up and cooling down for atleast 1 hour = increasing number of machines meant that 3 could be used in rotation to allow cooling
only detected hard objects (wood splinters and dirty cloth bits might cause infection) = doctors carefully searched for these fragments whilst operating
